From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Over here at About.com, we're officially in the full swing of things with our site-wide Readers' Choice Awards, which touch on topics from Books to Lawn Equipment to Music to Baby Clothes.

Readers' Choice Awards
Two of our books and literature sites are participating in this year's Readers' Choice Awards, so have a look and cast your votes. The rules specify one vote per person per category per day, so vote early and vote often!

Books Into Movies 2012
On Oscar night, we saw the vast majority of the Best Picture Nominees coming from literary adaptations. I wonder which books-into-movies from 2012 will receive the same honors!

RIP Jan Berenstain
Children's book author Jan Berenstain passed away on Friday at the age of 88. I adored The Berenstain Bears series when I was a kid, and I suspect the series will remain beloved by children for generations to come.

Review: 'The Flame Alphabet' by Ben Marcus
Need something new to read? If you enjoy dark, post-modern literature, this one might fit the bill: what if the angry words your children spoke to you could not only hurt you emotionally, but physically as well? That's the premise of this dystopian story, wherein preteens are able to transmit, via their words, a hideous degenerative disease, leaving parents running for their lives.

About Books & Literature: Love Is...

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Our Valentine's Day tradition? On February 15, when all the heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are suddenly on 50% discount, we buy a few and then snuggle up on the couch, stuffing our faces and watching a few hours of bad television. Ah, romance. Perhaps your plans involve something a bit more traditional?

Love Is...
A tree. - Harriet Beecher Stowe
A clash of lightnings. - Pablo Neruda
A star. - William Shakespeare
A homeless guy. Robert "Bo" Burnham
A dog from hell. Charles Bukowski

It just keeps getting better, I promise. Our Guide to Grammar and Composition, Richard Nordquist, assembled this hilarious and poignant list of 99 metaphors for love. The 100th? You'll have to provide that one yourself.

Love Poems for Valentine's Day
If your wife/partner/ladyfriend is anything like me, I promise that you cannot go wrong with a Valentine's card that consists of a folded piece of pretty paper upon which is written a classic poem. I'll be extra-happy if you include a box of discount chocolates in the mix. No, really.

Readers Share: The Best Danielle Steel Book
Maybe your idea of a great Valentine's Day is a hot bath and a romance novel? It sounds pretty good to me, actually. Our readers tell us (and you) their favorite releases by the Queen of romance, Danielle Steel.

Contemporary Books About Love
Or maybe your tastes lean more toward the literary, in which case these excellent novels and nonfiction tomes might just fit the bill. Our Guide to Contemporary Literature suggests a fun Valentine's activity: why not read to each other?

About Books & Literature: Books for Black History Month

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
February is Black History Month here in the United States, so let's take this opportunity to go back and re-read some of our favorite black poets and authors, and maybe discover some new ones!

Maya Angelou Books
I adore Maya Angelou. Her use of words is so musical and flowing that every sentence she writes reads like a song. If it's been awhile since you've picked up one of her glorious autobiographies, essays, or poems, do it soon!

Top 5 Harlem Renaissance Novels
The Harlem Renaissance was one of the most magnificent literary periods that the English-speaking world has ever seen. These five novels epitomize the era, in all of its jazz-imbued splendor and grit.

Great Kids' Books About African-American Freedom Fighters
Parents and educators, this list is for you. These books are the best of the best, in terms of both writing and subject matter, for teaching your kids and students about African-American history, and the people who made it.

'A Raisin in the Sun' by Lorraine Hansberry
We too often overlook the literary merit of great plays, and I confess that I sometimes forget that they're even an option when I'm looking for something to read. I'm going to remedy that with a re-read of this classic African-American family drama, which enjoyed a popular revival on Broadway just a few years ago.
