From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
We are one of the eleventy kajillion families whose travel plans have been mangled by the Snowpocalypse. Luckily, this just means that we're stranded at one relative's house for a couple of extra days. This relative has a fireplace and a couple of big, cozy chairs. We'll be fine.

Book Review: John Grisham's 'The Confession'
John Grisham writes great books for fireside reading. Fast-paced and engrossing, they pair nicely with slippers and hot chocolate. And his latest is a particularly suspenseful read, according to our reviewer.

Children's Books About Winter and Snow
If you've got little ones near you, and you can tear them away from their stack of new holiday toys for a moment, a read-aloud session with one of these great classic snowy-day books would surely make for a lovely and cozy afternoon.

Jack London's 'The Call of the Wild'
Maybe you're in the mood for a wintry classic. The Call of the Wild is always worthy of a re-read, and is absolutely on the must-read list if you haven't already.

'The Englishman Who Posted Himself & Other Curious Objects'
Or perhaps you'd just like to get away. Maybe you should try mailing yourself. No, seriously. This guy did it. At the very least, if you didn't already leave your friendly mail carrier a kind holiday gift, he or she would likely get a kick out of this nonfiction book about a fellow who did exactly as the title describes.

About Books & Literature: Literary Last-Minute Gifts

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Oh, you waited until this week to do your Christmas shopping? Yeah, me too. I'll probably wait until Friday, actually, and then go buy everything that's left at my local bookstore.

Creative Book Gifts for Everyone on Your List
I've been told that I'm tricky to buy gifts for. I think this is because I'm allergic to 90% of the standard slate of gifts for women. Candles? Perfume? Fancy soaps? Achoo. Books, though, are generally safe. Unless they're really old (achoo again), so stick with these 2010 releases.

The Best Bestsellers of 2010
You know my favorite part about giving books as gifts? They're pretty much the easiest thing in the world to wrap. This is why the 10-year-old in my life is getting books, not a football.

Gift Books for Manga Lovers
Who isn't a manga fan nowadays? For the rare few who have missed the international craze, these books would make a great introduction. For those who are already fans, they're just plain great.

Make Your Own Book
I had a baby this year, which, combined with a little bit of desktop publishing, officially makes 2010 the easiest year ever for Parent and Grandparent gift-giving. "Here, it's a book of pictures of the kid." "SQUEEEEEEEE!" is pretty much how it'll go.

About Books & Literature: The Best Books-Into-Movies of 2010

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Snowstorms all over the nation have the non-skiers among us diving for indoor entertainment. Books are great for the first 14 hours of the waking day, but you might choose to fill the final two hours with a movie now and again.

The Top Books-Into-Movies of 2010
The best thing about choosing a book-into-movie is that it gives you some conversational fodder at holiday parties. I mean, you've gotta talk to your boss's wife about something, and a book-vs.-movie rundown of Eat, Pray, Love certainly seems safer than politics.

Hans Christian Andersen -
Need a little something to get you in the seasonal spirit? Hans Christian Andersen's "The Pine Tree" (also translated as "The Fir Tree") is a wintry story about a little tree who really needs to learn how to live in the moment (mindfulness exercises, perhaps?) -- it doesn't have the most cheerful ending, but it might inspire you to enjoy these fleeting cozy days while they last.

Review: Salman Rushdie's 'Luka and the Fire of Life'
Need a great gift idea for your teenaged reader? Our reviewer gently suggests that you might look elsewhere. Rushdie's second attempt at a children's novel falls a little bit short, it seems.

Children's Books About the Nativity
If your family celebrates a religious Christmas, this selection of books might be just what you're looking for to help pass these snowy Advent nights.

About Books & Literature: A New One from Mark Twain and More

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Every couple of years, there's a new book that seemingly becomes the "it" gift for those who really have no idea what to get you. A few years back, for example, I received a whopping four copies of Julia Child's My Life in France ("I know you love cooking and reading!"). This year, I'm betting I'll see at least three copies of The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Vol. 1.

The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Vol. 1
Mark Twain wrote lots of memoirs, but before he died, he wrote an official autobiography and forbid his publishers from publishing it until 100 years after his death. The reason? He wanted to make sure that any named people were absolutely dead before the book was printed. Oh, this oughtta be good!

Dark Thoughts on Holiday Newsletters
Seeing as how I am actually a professional newsletter writer (weird, but true -- you're looking at the evidence, after all), it's sort of a given that I pen an annual newsletter, and I've been told I've got a real knack for it. By my grandmother. And no one else. Maybe I need to re-think this a little bit.
