About Books & Literature: Pulitzer Prize-Winning Fiction and More!

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
It's been a busy week in books, full of glory, scandals, and a little bit of big-screen glamour. It must be Spring!

Jennifer Egan's 'A Visit From the Goon Squad'
The Pulitzer Prize winners were announced last week, and Jennifer Egan's outstanding and wholly entertaining A Visit From the Goon Squad won her the honor. Haven't read it yet? Get to it!

'Three Cups of Tea' -- A Fraud?
The television show 60 Minutes did an expose that showed that the wildly popular memoir Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson, might not be the whole truth. Worse? The charity he founded, to which people have been inspired to donate en masse since this book became a bestseller, may have squandered funds. Oy.

'Water For Elephants' Movie Review
Water For Elephants splashed onto the silver screen this week, starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. Is is worth a book-lover's time?

Is There a Book in the House?
And the results of a important study came out this week. It says, to paraphrase, that the very act of keeping books in the home statistically increases the level of education that your children will attain. Even as few as twenty books leads to a much higher likelihood that your children will attend college. What this means for my family is, of course, that my kid is going to hold roughly 450 graduate-level degrees. Presuming, of course, that he is not killed by a falling stack of books before the time comes.

About Books & Literature: Spotlight on David Foster Wallace

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
David Foster Wallace and I were born in the same town, which is apropos of nothing, but I like to tell people about it anyway.

Review: 'The Pale King' by David Foster Wallace
Fittingly released on April 15, The Pale King is a difficult but splendid read, following the twisted, turning stories of characters who will ultimately convene at an IRS Examination Center in 1985. Sadly, it's a posthumous release, but a wonderful one.

David Foster Wallace Biography
Learn more about this master of hilarious and slightly convoluted prose, who died much too young.

'A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again'
If Wallace's thousand-page opus, Infinite Jest, is a bit much for you to tackle, perhaps these short(er) essays are more your speed. This is the ideal book to take on a cruise. (Snicker, snicker...)

More Books by David Foster Wallace
Or maybe you'd prefer short stories or other long fiction -- it's all here. Any way you squeeze it, David Foster Wallace is one of the great voices of our time, and if you haven't read any of his work, there's no time like the present.

About Books & Literature: Celebrate Young People's Poetry Week

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Everyone is celebrating National Poetry Month all through April, but this week is especially tailored to Young People. Notice they didn't call it "Children's Poetry Week." Nope, it's for Young People, which presumably includes both children and those who act like children.

Children's Books of Poems for Two or More Voices
Poems for two or more voices are such great fun to read. It's like being in a band, except the only required talent is an ability to read with oomph.

'Good Sports' by Jack Prelutsky
I don't know much about kids, but I do know this: they all love Jack Prelutsky's poems. As far as I can tell, Prelutsky is some sort of a wizard, as he's enchanted every youth he's come across, and most of their parents and teachers, with his witty and occasionally outlandish verse. This book is full of sports-themed poems, perfect for athletic-minded poetry-resistors of all ages.

New in Paperback: 'Ape House' by Sara Gruen
Oh, so you're not childish, you say? And you hate poetry? Fine, Grumpelstiltskin, here's some big-people reading for you. Sara Gruen's Water For Elephants is about to hit the big screen starring Edward -- er -- Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. Her sophomore release, Ape House, was not quite as well-received. Now that it's in paperback, you can afford to read it for yourself and see why.

Quotes from 'Atlas Shrugged'
Sara Gruen still too childish for you? All right, here's some really grown-up food for thought: Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is also about to be released as a feature film. Why? Pshhht -- don't look at me. I'm busy reading Jack Prelutsky and being nice to my neighbors, thank you very much. Seriously, though, having been in development since the '70s (not kidding), it should make a pretty big splash. If you, like me, aren't quite up for re-reading the entire behemoth of a novel, these quotes should catch you up.

About Books & Literature: Happy National Poetry Month!

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
As Spring rolls North and the flowers start blooming all over the United States, we're celebrating National Poetry Month over here in About.com Literatureland. We're resolving to read more poetry, perhaps write a little bit of poetry, and otherwise appreciate how dull and colorless life would be without poetry.

How to Celebrate National Poetry Month
We've got oodles of ideas for how to celebrate National Poetry Month. Read, write, recite, share, and more! Need some poetic inspiration? Look no further.

Books for Tweens and Young Teens About Writing Poetry
Some kids love poetry, and write it by the notebookful; others are slightly more reluctant. If you have a young writer in your life who needs a bit of a push or just a bit of polish, these great books will certainly be of help.

Emily Dickinson: 'Poetry, Series One'
Even reluctant poetry-readers often find themselves loving Emily Dickinson. Her poems are simple, rhythmic, and evoke lovely images of nature and beauty and the circle of life. Also, as they're almost all written in what's called "common meter," they can be sung to the tune of "Amazing Grace," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," or even the 'Gilligan's Island' theme song, as well as a number of other folk and popular songs. Isn't poetry fun?

Shakespeare's Sonnets
National Poetry Month also happens to coincide with The Bard's birthday, which falls on April 23rd, so why not make it a double-celebration and brush up on the sonnets?
