About Books & Literature: J.K. Rowling's 'The Casual Vacancy' and More

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Apropos of nothing, but because I know book-lovers like you will understand: no matter how many times I look at a shelf of French-language books, I will never get used to the fact that the spines are backward. Ours read from top to bottom (requiring a rightward head tilt), theirs read from bottom to top (requiring a leftward head tilt). I love the French language and French food and French culture, but French books are bound funny and that's all there is to it. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, onward with this week's newsletter selections!

Review: J.K. Rowling - 'The Casual Vacancy'
J.K. Rowling's long-awaited adult novel is officially in the stores, and we've got a review for you. It's an explicitly human story -- no wizards here -- and it'll come as no surprise that it's engaging and well-written. Have a gander. Read More...

Review: Dave Eggers - 'A Hologram for the King'
This spring release seems to be the hot-ticket addition to book club reading lists this fall. It's a subtle, strangely non-political allegory about the state of affairs between the U.S. and the Middle East, told through the character of Alan Clay, a salesman. Read More...

Full Text: 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'
In our third installment of spooky shorts to get you in the Halloween spirit, I'm going to suggest the classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. This is a personal favorite of mine because I've got ties to Sleepy Hollow itself (there's a big enormous Romer family plot in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, not far from the grave of Washington Irving himself). More to the point, though, it's a great story that has been retold a zillion and one times, but which is glorious (and spooky) in its original prose.

About Books & Literature: Nobel Prize, Books for Jodi Picoult Fans, and More

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
This week, I've got myself a nice long airplane ride. In the days leading up to plane trips, I used to fret over which book (or three) I'd bring, ultimately usually hating my decision and buying something trashy in an airport after all that. Now I have an e-reader, and it is currently loaded up with approximately 75,000 books. I'll be off the plane before I decide where to start.

Mo Yan Wins 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature
This past week, the 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature was bestowed upon Chinese author Mo Yan, whose work I have admittedly never read. Several of his books are readily available in translation, though, and I've downloaded his novel The Garlic Ballads to my e-reader, and I will hopefully remember to get to it soon. Read More...

If You Like Jodi Picoult, You Might Like...
A new Jodi Picoult novel won't be released until next year, so if you're a fan looking to fill the gap, check these novels out. Heck, if you're not a fan, check 'em out anyway -- there's some great stuff here! Read More...

Happy Teen Read Week!
When I was a teenager, all I did was read. So... yep. I sure have changed a lot. Mmm-hmm. Apparently not all teens spend their whole day lost in a book, though, and Teen Read Week is one of the more exciting initiatives to help get them interested in books. Read More...

Edgar Allen Poe - "The Pit and the Pendulum"
As the third installment to this little countdown to Halloween scary story series, I wanted to post Edgar Allen Poe's very scariest story. I read a whole bunch of them and have barely slept since. His stuff is seriously eerie. Still, I had to pick one, so here's "The Pit and The Pendulum" (the complete text, free to read) -- tied for first place with pretty much everything else Poe ever wrote. About Books & Literature: New Books for October 2012

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
There was an honest-to-goodness morning chill in the air both yesterday and today. So that pretty much seals it. I'll be hiding under this quilt for the next six months. At least you know where to find me.

New Books for October 2012
October's always a good month for book releases. People are settling into the school year's schedule and the darker evenings lend themselves well to a good book and a hot drink. This month sees releases from Tom Wolfe, John Grisham, and Dennis Lehane, as well as several excellent up-and-comers.

Children's Picture Books About Fall
Fall was always a tough transition for me as a kid (and in related news, me as an adult), and I never much liked the idea that summer was over. I suspect some nice books about crunchy leaves and pumpkin pies might've cheered me up. In fact, I think I'll try some of these books now, though I'll pretend they're for my kid, of course.

Review: 'Vlad' by Carlos Fuentes
It's the season for scary reading, and this modern twist on the classic vampire legend is just the thing. Says our reviewer: "Fuentes aims for a low, narrow niche and succeeds masterfully at creating a nostalgic horror story with an intriguing layer of allegory beneath its gloomy surface."

W.W. Jacobs - "The Monkey's Paw"
There's nothing like a spooky story to get you in the Halloween mood. Here's the second installment of our newsletter's series of classic frightening short stories. If you've never read it, you're in for a treat.
