About Books & Literature: Thanksgiving Reading (And A Big Welcome)

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Here in the States, we're gearing up for this Friday's day-long feast of leftovers (and Thursday's meal too, of course, but I've always preferred the leftovers to the main event, for some reason). While we wait, let's take a minute and say a huge welcome to our newest About.com Books and Literature Guide, Niko Silvester, who is running the show at the brand new Young Adult Books Site. Welcome, Niko!

Favorite Books for Teen Boys
Niko's got some suggestions for a book that any teenager, boy or girl, might like, with special considerations for the reluctant young fellas.

The 12 Best Children's Books for Thanksgiving
I'm having a little bit of a hard time explaining Thanksgiving to my toddler. He seems to think there will be presents. There won't. And I'm not sure that cornbread stuffing will really assuage his disappointment when he figures this out. There's still time for me to pick up one or two of these books, though, which might also help entertain him while I attempt to wrestle my brined turkey out of the bucket without coating my kitchen in salmonella.

Thanksgiving Quotes From the Classics
"Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude." - E.P. Powell (Read More...)

About Books & Literature: Read 'The Hobbit' Before it Hits the Big Screen

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
I have only read The Hobbit once, and it was in seventh grade, which was entirely too many decades ago. Since it's headed to the big screen in exactly one month, I've got some time to give it a glorious re-read. (Who am I kidding? I'm going to put it off and then cram the whole thing in on December 12th and 13th.)

Read It Before You See It: 'The Hobbit'
I try really, really hard to always read books before I see their film adaptations. Technically, I've read The Hobbit, but I'm (tragically) not joking when I say that it's been a really, really long time. But I'm on top of it, folks! How 'bout you? Read More...

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' - What You Should Know
So they've turned The Hobbit into a three-movie series, with part one hitting theaters on December 14. Thankfully, my local movie theater is nowhere near my local shopping mall -- a place I avoid like the pestilence during the entire month of December. Read More...

J.R.R. Tolkien Profile/Biography
For those of you who never knew but always wondered? "John Ronald Reuel." There's more to be learned about this brilliant fellow, though, so read on. Read More...

Quotes From 'The Hobbit'
Perhaps you've read the book enough times that you don't require a re-read, but just a brush-up? Here are some quotes for you. The rest of you, I know what you're thinking, and don't you dare think you can skip reading the books in favor of reading some quotes! Don't you do it! Read More...

Poems for Veterans Day
Veterans Day, coming up on November 11 (November 12, observed) is one of the only modern holidays that has incorporated poetry into the tradition: typically the classic "In Flanders Fields" is read during services, and other poems are also often included in the day's solemnities. It's a beautiful thing, really. Read More...
