This Week in Books & Literature
We get you up to speed on the novel we just don't stop hearing about, offer some advice on keeping your reading group fresh, and prove you should be skeptical of those "bestseller" stickers.
The Controversial New Novel Everyone Is Talking About
"Jonathan Franzen: You may have heard of him. The bestselling author of The Corrections and Freedom, Franzen is in recent years slightly more famous for his disastrous forays into media of all kinds, saying preposterous things and generally coming off as a blustering, pompous dork who has a fairly clear disdain for most everything unlike himself...Still, he's a talented writer, and his new novel, Purity, is more than likely to wind up on the bestseller lists. Here's how to talk about Purity, whether you've read it or not, so you can join in the general Franzen Party that every new novel inspires."

What Does "Bestseller" Mean Anyway?
"When you peruse the shelves at a local bookstore or flip through covers online, you'll notice that a lot of books boast about being a bestseller. As well they should; although you can land on any given bestseller list with fewer than 10,000 copies old, that's still a pretty incredible number of copies sold for any book that isn't, say, The Bible. While you might consider that 50 Shades of Grey has sold over 125 million copies, making that 10,000 bar pretty weak sauce, any writer will tell you the idea of 10,000 total strangers paying good money for their book is pretty incredible. There isn't a single, over-arching bestseller list, however...There are literally hundreds of other bestseller lists, ranging from very genre-specific to region-specific, but these four are the ones you're most likely to see on a book cover. And the fun thing is, they all calculate their lists in different ways."
