From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
The American Library Association rolled out its annual list of Children's Book Award winners last week, including the 2012 Caldecott Medalist.

And the Caldecott Medal Goes To...
A Ball for Daisy! Written (so to speak) and Illustrated by Chris Raschka, this wordless picture book follows the adventures of a sweet little dog and her favorite ball. Because it has no words, your child is free to narrate the story him or herself, which is both great for their language development but also simply good fun.

'Me... Jane' -- A Caldecott Honor Books
The three Caldecott Honor recipients were Blackout, Grandpa Green, and Me...Jane, the latter of which also made our Guide to Children's Books Best Illustrated Books of 2011 list. It's a true story about primatologist Jane Goodall, and her transformation from an animal-loving child to a world-renowned scientist.

'The Notorious Benedict Arnold'
Steve Sheinkin's The Notorious Benedict Arnold was awarded the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults, Ages 12 to 18. It's a fascinating and quick read, and one of the better biographies of this Revolutionary War figure that's ever been written, so even if you're out of the targeted age range, it's worth a look-see.

'Wonderstruck'
Brian Selznick (of The Invention of Hugo Cabret fame) wrote and illustrated Wonderstruck, which was awarded the Schneider Family Book Award, which recognizes "artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences." Both of the main characters in Wonderstruck are deaf. Wonderstruck also made our Guide's Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2011 list.

Tell us, are you more likely to buy a book for your child if it's an award winner?

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
Our expert Guides have lots of words about words for you this week -- read on!

10 Things You May Not Have Known About
I always make a point of reading or watching Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech on his celebrated holiday, and yesterday was no exception. Though I've read it several dozen times at this point, it always inspires me, and this list, from our in-house Grammar Guru Richard Nordquist, gave me an even deeper understanding of not only some of the historical background of the speech, but some of the brilliant bits of rhetoric that Dr. King used to drive his message home.

Review: 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'
Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is hitting the big screen this week in an adaptation that stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. If you haven't read it, now would be a great time to get started!

Children's Books About the Chinese New Year
As you might imagine, there exist a number of really wonderful picture books about the Chinese New Year (which falls on January 23 this year) -- vividly illustrated and beautifully told. Have a look!

15 Ways to Enjoy Manga (Without Going Broke)
If you're a manga fan (or have found yourself in the dubious position of supporting the manga habit of a devoted teenage fan), here are some great tips for getting your hands on some free or cheap manga. And hey, if you've never checked out the genre, these thrifty pointers can help you do so without a big financial commitment!

About Books & Literature: Good Books to Read in the Winter

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
I realize that we're on the upward swing of daylight, but it's still very dark, very early, and it's chilly, to boot. The silver lining, of course, is that there's no better way to pass a blustery winter's night than with a hot drink and a good book!

Good Books to Read in Winter
Some books have a wintery theme, while others just lend themselves well to crackling fireplaces. Here are a few great reads for long nights.

Review: 'The Third Reich' by Roberto Bolano
Our Guide to Contemporary Literature, Mark Flanagan, describes The Third Reich as a "somewhat surrealist tourism-drama about a German board-game champion who, while on vacation on the coast of Spain and intermingling with a cast of shady characters, slides quietly into emotional breakdown." It certainly sounds intriguing enough, and our reviewer gave it a whopping five stars, so I think we're on the right track here.

Review: 'Legend' by Marie Wu
Did you like The Hunger Games books? If so, this first book in a new young adult dystopian trilogy just might be the next best thing for you.

'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' by James Joyce
I mentioned last week that part of my New Year's Resolution is to read at least 20 classic novels that I've never read before. First on my list is A Portrait.... I've read both Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake, but somehow never made it through this one, and I'm jumping in with both feet. Because I don't have any English professors holding my hand through this one, I'm using this List of Questions for Study and Discussion to keep me on task. Believe it or not, this is great fun for me!
