About

From Emily Faherty, your About Books & Literature Editor
When trick-or-treaters come a-knockin' this Halloween, will you give out books instead of candy? It may sound crazy to some, but that's the message of All Hallows' Read. We love the idea (even if it means giving up a few Kit Kats and Snickers), but wonder how to convince kids that reading is better than sugary sweets. That sounds like a challenge for the About.com Books and Literature Experts!

What Is All Hallows' Read?
English author Neil Gaiman (of Coraline and The Graveyard Book fame) first proposed All Hallows' Read in 2010. His simple pitch? Give someone a scary book on Halloween. Our Young Adult Books Expert says she's on board with the latest Halloween tradition. Are you?

How To Approach Reluctant Readers
There are many different types of reluctant readers. But scarier than all the monsters, ghouls, and goblins of Halloween is a temper tantrum from a child who reads well but has little interest in doing so. Proceed with caution.

About

From Emily Faherty, your About Books & Literature Editor
In case you missed it, Canadian author Alice Munro won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature last week and was recognized as a "master of the contemporary short story." Let's learn more about this and other prestigious writing awards, and find out if you might have the writing chops to take home a prize of your own.

Better Than Chick Lit
Munro is the 13th woman to be named a Nobel Laureate in Literature. Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf became the very first in 1909, but who are the other ladies she joins?

Pulitzer, Edgar, and More
While the Nobel Prize in Literature is a huge honor for writers, it's not the only literary award out there. Now who can guess which genre the Edgar Awards include?

Are There Awards For Children's Books?
There sure are! Not only is there the annual John Newbery Medal, the most distinguished prize for children's books, there are also awards for Latino authors, young adult literature, and separate honors for illustrators.

So You Think You Can Write...
If this list of literary awards is inspiring the budding author in you, consider entering a short story writing contest. The winnings are not quite as big as the Nobel Prize, but the thrill of victory might be just as sweet.
