About Books & Literature: New From Oates and Le Carre; Comic and Manga Films

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
I've been on a nonfiction kick since before the New Year, but I'm starting to itch for some fiction. Good thing there's plenty out there that I haven't read yet!

Review: 'Give Me Your Heart' by Joyce Carol Oates
Not so many years ago, I read an interview with Joyce Carol Oates, wherein she said that she writes longhand, and spends a dedicated workday writing, each and every day. As a terribly undisciplined young writer, this stuck with me, and has made me feel guilty about my random working hours and unpredictable bouts of productivity ever since.

Review: 'Our Kind of Traitor' by John le Carre
I don't know a darned thing about John le Carre's writing process, but I assume that it, too, would put mine to shame.

Movie Review: 'The Green Hornet'
When it was first announced that Seth Rogen would be starring in this comic book adaptation, I think everyone in the comic books world said, "What, what!?" in unison. Turns out, though, critics and audiences alike quite like him in the role.

Manga Movie 'GANTZ' Makes Star-Splashed Premiere in LA
... and our very own Deb Aoki was on hand for the big premiere of the new manga movie GANTZ. It sounds like the original manga was better than the movie (but isn't the book always better than the movie?) but the premiere itself was quite the trip.

It is still snowing. That is all.

Great Books to Read in the Winter
Since basically everyone in North America is snowed in (again), I imagine lots of reading is getting done. Need some ideas for your own reading list? These books pair perfectly with hot chocolate. Oh, and if you're in the Southern hemisphere? Go read a beach book and quit rubbing it in.

About Books & Literature: Colm Toibin's 'The Empty Family' and More

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
The snow that is blanketing half of the U.S. makes for poor driving conditions but outstanding reading conditions. I've nearly plowed through my stack of Christmas gift books, which means that I may be forced to get my snow gear on and plod to the local bookstore for a re-stock. I'm not complaining.

Review: 'The Empty Family' by Colm Toibin
I really loved Colm Toibin's 2009 novel, Brooklyn, and I'm thus really looking forward to digging into The Empty Family, a collection of short stories.

Books Into Movies 2011
I always prefer to read the book before seeing the movie. Thing is, I don't always pay very close attention to which movies are being made, so by the time they hit the screens, I have to scramble to get the book read. Thankfully, Erin Collazo Miller has provided me with a cheat sheet which will prepare me for this year's offerings.

Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2010
2010 was a great year for books for all ages. In case you missed some of the better new picture books for the younger set, here's a rundown of the very best.

Upcoming Manga for 2011
2011 looks like it'll be a big year for manga, with exciting new titles from old favorites and first-time authors/illustrators alike.

About Books & Literature: Looking Forward, Looking Back

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
January is named for Janus, the two-faced Roman God who simultaneously saw the past and the future. In that spirit, here's a literary salute to the year we finished and a great big howdy to the one that we're starting.

People's Choice: Best of 2010
These books made big impacts in 2010, clinging to the top spots on bestsellers lists all over. They were the ones discussed in book clubs and at water coolers, and which will all undoubtedly be seen in movie form within another couple of years (if they're not already...).

New Years' Resolutions for the Comics Fan
I am a terribly lazy New Years' resolution-maker (I haven't even made mine yet), but I can always get behind resolutions that add fun to my life, unlike, say, that pesky exercise resolution that I already broke.

New Releases for January 2011
And here are some new releases for this month, which include a set of unpublished short stories from Kurt Vonnegut. Excuse me, I have to go jump up and down and scream with joy now.
